Monterey is located in Highland County in mid-western Virginia, in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains, elevation 3000'. Town population is about 250 and the county is about 2500. Major industries are agriculture and logging. Tourism is becoming of greater importance to the area.

People travel to Highland to hunt, hike, fish, camp, birdwatch, ride motorcycles and bicycles, enjoy the beautiful scenery and sunsets, the lambs and calves in the fields, the fresh air, the peace and quiet. Highland County is a break from almost ANY other place. Authors come here to write, artists to paint and there are many extremely talented local people. The pace here is much slower than city life with accusations of us 'rolling up the sidewalks at dusk'. We're not quite that bad but, you will have a chance to sit back, breathe deeply and enjoy being here.

The county promotes many special events. The second and third weekends of March bring the Maple Festival, the Lions club has street dances in July and August, the county fair is in late August, October brings out the leaf watchers and the fall foliage festival and Wintertide brings in the holidays in December. McDowell is a civil war battle site commemorated with 'Battlefield Days' in May which often include a re-enactment of the battle.

Come enjoy our mountains. The average elevation in Highland County is the highest of any county east of the Mississippi River. Peaceful mountain skylines provide the backdrop for spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Travel along our backroads, see Devil's Backbone, a natural rock formation hundreds of years old, hike the wilderness trails of Laurel Fork, explore the headwaters of three major rivers: the Potomac, the James and the Jackson. Savor fresh mountain air, find lovely wildflowers, glimpse deer grazing in the roadside meadows: Highland County is special.

Snowshoe ski area and Cass Railroad are 45 minutes away, Garth Newel chamber music center is 35 minutes away and there are several trout hatcheries in the county where you may purchase fresh trout if you don't care to catch them on your own.
